The South Netherlands Philharmonic

The South Netherlands Philharmonic is an ambitious and flexible symphony orchestra, lauded for its high quality, close cooperation, and appealing enthusiasm. The passionate musicians deliver custom work on the highest, artistic level. In its fifth season, the orchestra is one full of confidence, as one of the cultural jewels of South-Netherlands society. Season 2017-2018 is the second, promising season under the baton of chief conductor Dmitry Liss. For his first season, Liss was embraced by both the press and the audience, praised for being a ‘performer of calibre in heart and soul’, for his ‘theatricality and stillness’. The orchestra performs music ranging from Bach’s St. Matthew’s Passion to world premières of contemporary composers: literally the complete symphonic literature.

Characteristic of the South Netherlands Philharmonic is its informed attention to innovation, with adventurous cross-over programmes like i-Classics and bridging the division with the world of business during Leading the South. In addition, the South Netherlands Philharmonic is the symphonic laboratory of the Maastricht Centre for the Innovation of Classical Music (MCICM). Education too is an integral component of the orchestra. With excellent musical programmes for school students of all ages, children and young people can come and experience the power and magic of live music up close. Talent development of tomorrow’s musicians is stimulated as well. That way, the South Netherlands Philharmonic will keep building a sustainable, musical future for the region of the South-Netherlands.
