CELLO
Henri Demarquette

Born in 1970, Henri Demarquette enters the National Music Academy in Paris (Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris) at the age of 13, where he studies with Philippe Muller and Maurice Gendron. Winning the first prize unanimously, he also works with Pierre Fournier and Paul Tortelier, and later with  Janos Starker in Bloomington, USA.

Familiar with the stage since he was 14, he began his career at the age of 17 with a debut recital at the Châtelet theatre in Paris and a show on France 3 television channel with the pianist Hélène Grimaud. He is immediately noticed by Sir Yehudi Menuhin who invites him to play Dvorák’s Concerto in Prague and Paris, Sir Menuhin conducting himself. Since then, his career has been developing internationally and led him to major cities, with foremost French and foreign orchestras, chamber music. He also likes to play with his favourite partners : B.Engerer, M.Dalberto, D.Makhtin, G.Caussé.

Henri Demarquette performed with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Musikalische Akademie of Mannheim, the Budapest Chamber Orchestra, l’ Orchestre National d’Ile de France, l’Orchestre de Bretagne, l’Orchestre de Cannes Provence Côte d’Azur, l’Orchestre Colonne. His repertoire includes Schumann, Dvorak, Tchaïkovsky and Haydn, Dutilleux, Prokoviev, Greif and Beethoven.

An inquiring mind, Henri Demarquette likes to take crossroads, regularly performs contemporary music, and likes to stand up for unusual pieces. One of his most original adventures is the Piazzolla Forever program that he performs with accordionist Richard Galliano and his septet.
He also works in close collaboration with major current composers with the result of new works from his close relations, especially Olivier Greif who dedicated his concerto « Durch Adams Fall » to Henri Demarquette, created at salle Pleyel in 2000, Marc Minkowski conducting.

Furthermore, he is in charge of the MUSIKALIA society, which has the double goal to transmit the love of music to children and to organise the eponymous festival in Paris, for all audiences.

This open-minded approach reflects itself in his eclectic recording history, crowned by numerous French and foreign awards including the ffff of Télérama, the “Choc du monde de la musique” and the “RTL d’or” prize. He recorded a DVD of the complete Beethoven sonatas with Michel Dalberto (Armide), the complete works for cello and piano of Chopin with Brigitte Engerer (Intrada), Bach’s unaccompanied cello Suites (in the Etoiles collection of the Auvers sur Oise festival), Beethoven’s two Trios for clarinet, cello and piano with Florent Heau and Jérôme Ducros (Zig-Zag Territoires), a record dedicated to Eric Tanguy (Transart Live), the two Haydn Cello Concertos with the Toulouse Chamber Orchestra (Verany), the Legend by Jean Cras with the Luxemburg Philharmonic Orchestra (Timpani), The Romantic Cello with François Frédéric Guy (Verany), and a record devoted to Jean Françaix with the Orchestre de Bretagne, conducted by the composer.
He published in 2006 James Mac Millan’s complete works for cello and piano with Graham Scott (Deux-elles) and the Guy Ropartz's Rhapsodie with the Orchestre de Bretagne conducted by K.Karabits

Henri Demarquette plays a 1697 Italian cello by Goffredo Cappa and a 1820 Persoit bow.

He released with Brigitte Engerer a CD for Warner Music devoted to the French composers. This CD was highly praised by the press.

In 2008-2009, Henri Demarquette will appear with the French National Orchestra (GREIF) in Bratislava with the Orchestral Ensemble of Paris, in Riga with the Sinfonietta Riga (Hayth), in Geneva, at the Printemps des Arts in Monte Carlo, and will also be invited at the Saint Riquier’.
