Dmitri Liss
Born in 1960, Dmitri Liss is a graduate of the Moscow Conservatory where he studied with the Music Director of the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, Professor Dmitry Kitayenko. Dmitry Liss began working with this orchestra as a conductor’s assistant. On graduation from the conservatory in 1984 he became a conductor of the Kuzbass Symphony Orchestra. In 1991 he was appointed to the position of Chief Conductor of this orchestra and at this time became the youngest chief conductor in Russia. Since 1995, Dmitry Liss has served as an Artistic Director/Chief Conductor of the Ural Philharmonic Orchestra. Most recently, Liss was appointed Associate Conductor of the Russian National Orchestra (1999-2003). In 1997-1999 he was Principal Russian Conductor of the American Russian Youth Orchestra.
Winner of the 1st International Competition of Young Conductors «Lovro Matacic» (Zagreb, 1995).
D. Liss has toured all over the world. As a guest conductor he performed with the Russian National Orchestra, Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, St.-Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Big Tchaikovski State Symphony Orchestra, KBS Symphony (Korea), Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Trondheim Symphony Orchestra (Norway), Dutch Radio Symphony Orchestra, Residentieorkest, North Netherlands Orchestra (the Netherlands), Bern Symphony Orchestra (Switzerland), Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra (Japan), Pacific Symphony (the USA), Winnipeg Symphony (Canada), Strasbourg National Orchestra (France), Malmo Symphony Orchestra, Norrkoping Symphony Orchestra (Sweden), ARSIAN Musica Symphony Orchestra (Spain), Jena Philharmonic Orchestra, Rheinische Philharmonic Orchestra (Germany), orchestra La Novi Musici (Italy), Janacek Philharmonic Orchestra (Czech Republic), Pomeranian Philharmonic Orchestra, Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra (Poland), Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra (Croatia), Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra (Hungary), Estonian National Orchestra, Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra, Transilvanian Philharmonic Orchestra (Romania), San Miguel Philharmonic Orchestra and Manila Philharmonic Orchestra (Philippines), symphony orchestras of Moscow, Novosibirsk, and many other cities of the former USSR. In February 2009, he will make his debuts with the Orchestre National de France and Arkadi Volodos.
D. Liss performed with M. Rostropovich, G. Kremer, M. Pletniov, A. Gavrilov, B. Berezovsky, W. Marsalis, Yu. Bashmet, V. Tretyakov, V. Repin, S. Mintz, G. Apap, A. Suwanai, N. Gutman, C. Carr, S. Gabetta, A. Kniazev, B. Belkin, P. Donohoe, C. Katsaris, D. Bashkirov, N. Petrov, V, Kraynev; took part in numerous international festivals; has recorded CDs for variety of American, English, French, Russian, Japanese, Taiwanese, Belgian and Swiss companies.
In a season of 2005-06 D. Liss recorded 6 CDs for Warner Classics (Miaskovsky’s Symphonies Nos. 6 and 10; Tchaikovsky’s Piano concerto No. 1, Piano concerto by Khachaturian with Boris Berezovsky) and Mirare (complete Piano concertos by Rachmaninov (soloist – Boris Berezovsky); Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 and Francesca da Rimini; Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade and Russian Easter). Along with the Ural Philharmonic Orchestra he performed at festivals of Radio France (Montpellier), Europalia (Belgium), La roque d’Antheron festival (France), La Follee Journee (Nantes, Bilbao, Tokyo), festival Symphony Orchestras of the World in Moscow.
